SHARTSIS FRIESE LLP PUBLIC INTEREST FELLOWSHIP ANNOUNCEMENT
Staff Attorney Position
with an emphasis on tenant and worker rights
(Start Date: September 6, 2011)

 The Organization:

Centrol Legal was started in Oakland and strives to  low income and strives to strengthen low-income and Latino individuals and families by providing free and low-cost, bilingual, and culturally competent legal representation, education, and advocacy

 The Fellowship:

Centro Legal provides an ideal training ground for an attorney seeking experience in providing direct legal aid to low-income individuals and families in a community-based setting. This is a two-year position

Duties and Responsibilities:

   The fellow will assist the Legal Services Director in all areas of Centro Legal's Tenants' Rights and Workers' Rights programs, including (but not limied to):

  • •Providing legal advice to tenants who receive an eviction notice or Unlawful Detainer;
    •Representing tenants in administrative hearings before the City of Oakland Rent Adjustment Program
    •Helping low-wage workers fight unlawful working conditions by providing legal help for wage claims, discrimination, as well as other employment-related matters;
    •Conducting community education and outreach regarding tenants' and workers' rights. 

Qualifications

First and foremost, the applicant must profoundly share Centro Legal's mission and vision of social justice. Below are additional qualifications.  

  • •Law degree
  • •Fluent in Spanish;
    •Member in good standing with the California State Bar;
    •Experience in housing and/or employment law preferred; and
    •Experience working with low-income, immigrant, and monolingual Spanish-speaking communities preferred.

Compensation:

Salary: $45,000 plus medical and dental benefits and a generous vacation and holiday package
