UN Employment Information Sessions
August 16, 2006 at 11:05 AM
The U.S. State Department’s UN Employment Information and Assistance Unit has agreed to make a visit to the Bay Area to talk to law students about opportunities for American lawyers in the UN and other international organizations.
Two representatives from the UN Employment Unit will be on Stanford Law School’s campus on Tuesday, October 3rd and on the UC Hastings campus on Wednesday, October 4th to give presentations regarding opportunities and qualifications for employment in international organizations. Law students from all Bay Area law schools are encouraged to attend these sessions. Many thanks to UC Hastings for sponsoring and offering up their space for the San Francisco session.
Although more specific information and flyers will be distributed in the next month, the tentative schedules for October 3rd at Stanford will include four sessions (1:00-2:15 p.m; 2:30-3:45 p.m; 4:00-5:15 p.m; and 5:30-6:45 p.m.). The tentative session schedules for UC Hastings on October 4th will be 12:40-1:30 p.m. and 3:00-4:30 p.m. Incidentally, the UN Employment representatives will be visiting UC Berkeley’s Masters and Ph.D. Career Fair on October 5th; however, we encourage law students to attend one of the earlier presentations focused on legal opportunities.
We would like to collect questions from you to forward to our visiting UN Employment Representatives in advance of their visit. This way, we can make sure that the questions we commonly get regarding UN employment are addressed during the sessions.
Please address questions to:

Volunteers Needed as Mock Jurors for Trial Skills Training Course
May 31, 2006 at 3:25 PM
The Benchmark Institute is a training and performance development organization dedicated to increasing the quality and quantity of legal services to low income communities. They teach lawyers who serve the poor, seniors, people with disabilities and other very low-income clients.
The Benchmark Institute is conducting a trial skills training course for those lawyers in July and are seeking student volunteers to sit as jurors for mock trials they are preparing, culminating in final trial simulations at the San Jose Superior Court on Saturday, July 22, 2006. They are running 7 trials this year and need at least 35 jurors.
Jurors are an important part of making the trial as real as possible. The Benchmark Institute videotapes jury deliberations so that the participants can see them and ask the jurors to give feedback to the participants. They also provide continental breakfast and lunch for all of the volunteer jurors. They use a landlord/tenant case for the simulations.

Public Interest/Public Sector Legal Careers Day (PI/PS Day) is hosted each February by the Public Interest Clearinghouse and nine Northern California Law Schools.
PI/PS Day provides law students an opportunity to meet and interview with public interest and public sector legal organizations. The event also gives organizations exposure to a large group of people dedicated to public service, a chance to speak with and formally interview a large, diverse group of law students, and a forum for interacting with other public service organizations and government agencies.
The 21st Annual PI/PS Day was held on Saturday, February 12, 2005 at the University of California, Hastings College of the Law, in San Francisco. 121 organizations and 740 law students attended.
PI/PS Day consists of:
1. Formal Interviews: Organizations conduct formal, pre-screened interviews at PI/PS Day for paid, work-study or volunteer positions. These interviews are open only to students at the nine sponsoring schools.
2. Meet the Advocates: During Meet the Advocates, representatives from various organizations and agencies sit at tables and students circulate and speak with them informally. Students do not need to make any advance arrangements with individual organizations for these sessions. Meet the Advocates is an excellent chance to learn about the work done by a large number of organizations and to explore opportunities with them. Each year, many students attending the MTA sessions are offered interviews after PI/PS Day – and these often result in jobs.
For more information, please contact event coordinator Althea Smiley at the Public Interest Clearinghouse at (415) 834-0100, ext. 307, or asmiley@pic.org.
