Roofing Project
June 26, 2009 at 10:43 AM

As many of you are aware the law library experienced a number of roofing leaks during the past rainy season. The University facilities department has been planning a roofing project to address the problem. The law school staff, although aware that a project was in the planning stages, was just informed at a meeting June 17 that the re-roofing project would begin Monday June 22, 2009. The project is scheduled to last approximately two months. Unfortunately for our library users the roofing project cannot be delayed.  A delay in the delivery of supplies has set the project back approximately one week.  It is now scheduled to being on June 29.

What this means for you, our library users, is that beginning on June 29 the contractors will begin preparations to commence work on the project. The roofing crew will begin to build scaffolding on the east side of the law library. This area will be fenced off for the duration of the project. The actual demolition, repairs and replacement of the roof is scheduled to begin a few days later. If all goes according to plan the contractors hope to be done with the first phase of the project by mid August. A final week of work will need to occur thirty days (probably in mid September) after the first phase is completed.

The purpose of the project is to completely replace the roof on the Heafey Law Library building (including the Heafey connector) and not just re-seal the roof as was done last summer. Work on the project is scheduled to occur from 6:00 AM to 2:30 PM Monday through Friday. The contractors will begin working on that portion of the roof adjacent to Bergin. Both the connector and the library will remain open throughout this renovation project. As a reminder the law library’s usual summer hours can be found on the library website at: http://law.scu.edu/library/library-hours.cfm.

Due to the fact that the entire roof needs to be removed, the project will generate a fair amount of noise as the workers demolish the existing roof, repair infrastructure, and put down a new roof. The workers will be working on a small part of the roof each day. The bad news is that the work will be noisy. The good news is that the workers should be done each day by 2:30 PM. Please remember that the University Library is available for you to use if the noise is intolerable. The library should be quiet from 2:30 PM. No work is scheduled for the weekends.

We realize that this may cause some inconvenience for some of you. We apologize for the short notice about the project. We hope to minimize the impact that this will have on those who use the law library. If you have questions about the project, please do not hesitate to contact the library administration. We would be happy to discuss the project with the SCU Law community.
