The Protestant Ethic and American Capitalism

There is an interesting discussion at the Becker-Posner Blog on the role of the protestant ethic in American capitalism. Richard Posner discusses a recent NY Times editorial by David Brooks which argues that the success of American capitalism is deeply rooted in the work ethic, and moral framework, of Colonial American Protestantism.

June 12--Loving Day

Today is the 41st anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court's decision in Loving v. Virginia that struck down Virginia's anti-miscegenation statute. Richard Loving and Mildred Jeter, both native Virginians, married each other in the District of Columbia. After they returned to Virginia, they were charged with violating the state's ban on interracial marriages. They pled guilty and were exiled from the state . . . .
