From Steven Perkins: The Dag Hammarskjöld Library at the United Nations has created a webpage in honor of International Day of the World’s Indigenous People, which has been celebrated on August 9th each year since a 1994 United Nations General Assembly resolution proclaiming the first International Decade of the World’s Indigenous Peoples. The United Nations proclaimed a second International Decade beginning on January 1, 2005. August 9th is the anniversary of the first meeting of the Working Group on Indigenous Populations of the Subcommission on Prevention of Discrimination and Protection of Minorities of the UN Commission on Human Rights.
The United Nations has also produced an International Day of the World’s Indigenous People website with links to the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues and information about today’s celebration at the United Nations Plaza.
