Federal Jobs and Taxes

Representative Jason Chaffetz (Utah) and several co-sponsors introduced legislation today which would make persons with serious tax debt ineligible for federal employment. The text of the legislation (H.R. 4735) should be on Thomas in a day or two. The Tax Prof Blog (Paul Caron) has a posting about the legislation.
According to an article by Erika Lovley in Politico, more than 600 House and Senate staffers haven’t paid 2008 federal taxes totaling more than $8 million, but current law only allows the federal government to terminate Internal Revenue Service employees for tax nonpayment.
