End of the death penalty in Illinois

Illinois Governor Pat Quinn signed legislation banning the use of the death penalty in Illinois. The sentences of 15 death row inmates were commuted to life in prison without parole. George Ryan, an earlier Illinois governor, had declared a moratorium on capital punishment in Illinois after an investigation by the Chicago Tribune exposed errors in many of the state's trials resulting in a death sentence.
