Judicial Externship

Eligibility & Description

Students must have a minimum of a 2.60 cumulative grade point average and must have completed Pleading and Civil Procedure with a grade of C or better.

 

The student will experience life in the courtroom as he or she assists judges in legal research concerning individual cases, observes litigators in the courtroom, and builds a more thorough understanding of the rules of pleading and civil procedure.


 

How To Find a Judicial Externship

Judicial externships may be found via Law Career Services, through the Symplicity job website, or a student may inquire on his or her own the availablilty of judicial clerkships by utilizing the SCU Judges and Courts list.

 

 

How to Register

Once the student has secured an offer from a court or judge, the student should submit the required Judicial Externship forms to the Director of Externships in the APD office, Bannan 230. Please see the Timeline for suggested deadlines.

 

Upon approval, the student will be able to enroll in LAW 594B or C (depending on full-time or part-time placement). Additionally, the student must also enroll in the Judicial Externship Seminar LAW 705 (for a first time placement) or LAW 706/707 for subsequent placements.

 

 

Requirements and Units Earned

Part-time externs earn one unit of credit for each 50 hours of fieldwork to a maximum of 6 units. A full-time extern earns 11 units of credit for fifteen weeks of full-time fieldwork (40 hours per week). A summertime extern can earn up to 5 units.
