Criminal Justice Externship and Seminar
Eligibility & Description
The student must be at least a second year student who has completed Pleading and Civil Procedure.
The student will work in a District Attorney's Office or Public Defender's Office under the direct supervision of a licensed attorney. These are government organizations in which the student will perform legal research, learn more about trial techniques, and assist in case development.
How to find a Criminal Justice Externship
Opportunities to work in these offices will likely be listed on the Symplicity job site as externships. Additionally, the District Attorney and Public Defender's Offices have their own individual websites that list employment opportunities and contact information. The links to the Santa Clara County offices are listed below.
How to Register
Once the student has secured an offer from one of the offices, the student should fill out the Criminal Justice Externship Registration Form and submit it to the Director of Externships in the APD Office, Bannan 230. Please see the Timeline for suggested deadlines.
Upon approval, the student will register for LAW 591B or C (depending on part-time or full-time placement) and the Externship Seminar Section LAW 705 for first time placements or LAW 706/707 for subsequent placements. The course is limited to 20 students.
Requirements & Units
Part-time externs earn one unit of credit for each 50 hours of fieldwork to a maximum of 6 units. A full-time extern earns 11 units of credit for fifteen weeks of full-time fieldwork (40 hours per week). A summertime extern can earn up to 5 units.
