The law of each state will inform the levying officer of the steps to be taken in levying a Writ of Execution. For example, to levy on real property, Cal. Code Civ. Pro. 700.015 instructs the sheriff to record the Writ and a Notice of Levy with the County Recorder in the county in which the real property is located and to serve a copy of the Writ and the Notice of Levy on one occupant of the real property. The law of each state also prescribes the process which the levying officer is then to pursue in conducting an execution sale of the property on which the Writ was levied.
