In California, one records a document known as an Abstract of Judgment with the County Recorder of the county in which the real property is located.   The lien resulting from recording is effective for a specified period of time. For example, in California, the lien on real property is effective for 10 years from the time of entry of the judgment upon which the lien is based, subject to renewal for successive 10 year periods.
