According to columnist Ed Foster, writing in an August 18, 2000 article in online magazine InfoWorld, Gateway had touted its Tenth Anniversary System as including a Matrox MGA Millennium graphics card, a 6X CD-ROM drive and Altec Lansing "Surround Sound" speakers. After a few months, user complaints and trade press reports claimed that the graphics card actually used was a cheaper product than the Matrox, the CD-ROM drive performed at 4X, and the speakers were not surround sound. If Gateway knew that its claims were false, that would constitute fraud and possible exposure under RICO.
