Any entity (e.g. a corporation, limited liability company, or partnership) or any individual may do business under a fictitious business name, but state statutes typically require that an entity or individual so doing register its real and fictitious name with a designated office such that those doing business with the entity or individual may discover its true name in the event litigation is necessary.  "Doing business as" is frequently abbreviated "dba."
