Life would be simpler if courts in all United States jurisdictions were similarly named.  Alas, they are not.  In New York, the Supreme Court is a trial level court, the Appellate Division is the intermediate appellate court, and the Court of Appeals is the highest level appellate court (comparable to the California Supreme Court).  The Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law Library has prepared a fuller description of the New York Courts and the jurisdiction of each.
