Judges are said to sit on "the bench" and hence judges are collectively referred to as "the bench" (as in "she attended a luncheon for the bench and bar").  A bench trial is a trial in which neither party has requested, or neither party is entitled to, a jury.  The judge therefore makes the findings of fact that otherwise would be made by a jury as well as reaching the legal conclusions always reserved to the judge.
