Hopkins invoked judicial process to obtain the 88 head of cattle but we can't tell from whom.  Was it from Morris Bough, the bailee?   Why wouldn't he voluntarily surrender the cattle to the Hopkins, assuming Hopkins offered to reimburse for costs of care?   Or was it from PCA who, we are told in the same sentence, "picked up" some cattle?  Had PCA picked up some cattle from Bough?
